About us

Established in 1964, University of Massachusetts Boston (UMass Boston) is nationally recognized as a model of excellence for urban public universities. The scenic waterfront campus, with easy access to downtown Boston, is located next to the John F. Kennedy Library and Presidential Museum, the Commonwealth Museum and Massachusetts State Archives, and the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate.

Part of the UMass system, UMass Boston combines a small-college experience with the vast resources of a major research university. With a 17:1 student-to-faculty ratio, students easily interact with professors because most teaching occurs in small class sizes. Ninety-three percent of full-time faculty hold the highest degree in their fields. UMass Boston’s diverse student body provides a global context for student learning, and its location in a major U.S. city provides connections to employers in industries such as finance, health care, technology, service, and education, offering students opportunities to gain valuable in-school experience via internships, clinicals, and other career-related placements.

More than 100 student organizations — including clubs, literary magazines, newspaper, radio station, art gallery, and 16 NCAA Division III sports teams — offer a rich campus life. Students live throughout Greater Boston and in apartment communities just steps from the campus, and enjoy the rich amenities, cultural attractions, and educational opportunities that make the city the biggest and best college town in the nation.

  • Facilities: UMass Boston is proud to be the commonwealth’s premier urban public research university. We offer an education equal to the best found at any private university, with a profound twist: We are affordable, accessible, and eager to welcome every student with the capability and desire to pursue higher education. We stand with the city and our neighbors in a shared commitment to public service. That this vibrant campus is growing in the midst of a stunning physical location is our great advantage. We can see the water from all sides of the campus. Light pours in through the windows of our Campus Center where students sit and work, enjoy one another’s company, or just stare out at the boats and sky. Our first residence hall opens in the fall, with an unparalleled view of the coast. And to this stunning setting come thousands of first generation students, speaking over 65 languages, to study with an outstanding faculty that is completely committed to their success.

  • Enhanced teaching environment: UMass Boston has recently been recognized for academic excellence by U.S. News and World Report, the Princeton Review, and other esteemed sources. But they are not telling us anything we don’t already know. And the best is yet to come. Take a few minutes to explore our website, learn more about our exciting programs, and then come to visit us. This is the place for the best, the brightest, the hardest working, the most ambitious students who have come to live and work in the epicenter of American higher education.
