The BA in Education and Human Development with a concentration in Special Education prepares undergraduate students to become teachers who will identify and champion the strengths and assets of children with differing abilities.
At CU Denver, we believe that the most in-demand teaching career is also the most fulfilling. This four-year, 126-credit hour undergraduate BA program prepares students to apply for a Colorado teaching license in Special Education. The BA will equip you with impactful and effective skills for leading inclusive classrooms and championing the strengths and assets of children with differing abilities. Every child deserves a highly qualified teacher in their classroom. We help put you there.
A unique feature of this pathway is that you will be able to add the Colorado Department of Education's elementary endorsement to your credentials. Essentially, you'll leave this program with both the Special Education license and Elementary Education endorsement through the Colorado Department of Education. This means you are prepared to teach Special Education and K- 6, making you highly employable and desirable to schools.
At the University of Colorado Denver, you'll learn from nationally and internationally recognized faculty members who are known for innovation and research in literacy, language, social and emotional growth, gifted and talented learners, students with learning disabilities and building a diverse teacher workforce. During the course of your studies, you'll learn about emotional/behavioral disabilities and learning disabilities in order to grow into a professional whom schools seek. You'll be surrounded by other committed, talented students who crave a deeper level of preparedness—one that will allow them to give their best to every student, every day.
You may be starting college for the first time, transferring from another institution, or returning to the university setting after years away. Regardless, you'll join a top education school with collaborative teams of dedicated teachers and award-winning faculty who will prepare you for success in any classroom anywhere.
Any school can promise a teacher residency, with experiential learning under a teacher mentor. Few can deliver one as well supported and prepared as ours. For more than 25 years, we have been working closely with area schools to create a proven residency program that supports your development as you work with teams of dedicated practicing teachers, teacher leaders and university faculty in the school. Further, because of our urban location and emphasis on teaching in diverse contexts, our graduates are ready to lead and make a difference in any Special Education classroom, in any district.
