Description

Neuroscience is the study of the structure and function of the nervous system with a special focus on the brain and its role in behavioral processes, the mechanisms of behavior, and the nature of cognitive function.

Multidisciplinary in nature, Neuroscience draws from a number of scientific fields including medicine, biology, psychology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, and engineering, and beyond, with the nervous system serving as the common focus. The field has emerged during the past two decades as part of the explosive growth of research and interest in the neural sciences.

Neuroscience is one of the most rapidly advancing fields of research and training and there is a high demand for qualified and experienced Neuroscience researchers and health-related professionals. The UAB Undergraduate Neuroscience Program helps fill this demand by preparing a new generation of UAB undergraduates who will be ideally equipped to pursue and succeed in a career in academic or government research, medicine, biotechnology in industry, and other health-related sciences.

The program is designed to provide a structure for coursework that assures a solid grounding in natural science and a broad familiarity with the field of Neuroscience. In addition, our curriculum satisfies most pre-medical and pre-health requirements, making it an ideal fit for those students looking to pursue a career in medicine, biomedical research, or other health-related professions. Students have the special opportunity to receive course credit for original research projects conducted in collaboration with a Neuroscience faculty mentor. Students will design and complete hands-on research in the labs of primary faculty across campus. Their research experience culminates with writing and presenting a comprehensive senior research thesis.
