Ready to excel? The UAB Department of Chemistry offers one of the strongest and most innovative chemistry programs in the entire Southeast.

Chemistry is at the forefront of the discoveries that change our lives — the clothes we wear, the air we breathe, the cars we drive, the drugs we take. Chemists create new materials, technologies, and medicines; they solve problems like pollution and energy conservation; they even identify better cooking methods.

Many of our students want to become chemists, which means graduate school and advanced degrees. Many others want to be doctors, optometrists, or pharmacists, or go into other health-related professions. If this is what you want to do, we'll help you get there. But you don't have go to graduate school. You could also become a teacher, a forensic scientist, technical writer, scientific journalist or illustrator, or a research assistant. You can even apply Chemistry to intellectual property/patent law.

So why study chemistry here? Here are just a few reasons:

  • Our curriculum is relevant, current, and comprehensive.
  • Our programs — general chemistry, biochemistry, chemical education, forensic chemistry, and polymer chemistry — are diverse.
  • Our honors program produces excellent scientists.
  • Our students have access to a full-time academic advisor to help them stay on track with their degree and their career goals.
  • Our faculty give their students the opportunity to be involved in world-class research.
