International Year One allows you to begin earning credits toward your degree even if you don’t meet the academic and English requirements for direct entry. You will receive additional support to help you successfully complete your first year and graduate in the same amount of time as direct entry students.

Our program emphasizes social and economic justice for populations at risk — meaning that you can make a change in the lives of real people. Professional social workers assist individuals, groups, and communities to restore or enhance their ability to function as they overcome some of life's most difficult challenges:

• addiction
• physical and mental illness
• discrimination
• loss

In fact, professional social workers are the nation's largest group of providers of mental health services, ahead of psychiatrists, psychologists and psychiatric nurses.

If you graduate with a Bachelor’s of Science in Social Work you will be prepared to enter the profession at entry-level. Many students who want a career in social work believe a degree in psychology or sociology will prepare them to compete for most social work positions. This is not the case — only students with a degree in social work are qualified to obtain related professional positions.

Our program includes a field practicum in which you will obtain hands-on experience in a social service agency under the direct supervision of a professional. The practicum is vital to the professional nature of the degree and distinguishes social work from academic degrees in related fields.
