Description

International Year One allows you to begin earning credits toward your degree even if you don’t meet the academic and English requirements for direct entry. You will receive additional support to help you successfully complete your first year and graduate in the same amount of time as direct entry students.

The UAB Department of Theatre prepares you for a future in the performing arts. You can pursue academic options that prepare you for careers in acting, directing, musical theatre, and stagecraft. The UAB Department of Theatre offers Bachelor of Arts with three different concentration options

  • Performance: The Performance Concentration emphasizes training for the actor’s voice, body, and mind -- the essential tools of the actor’s trade. Through careful study and extensive practice with movement techniques and vocal exploration, acting students gain the skills they need for their careers in performance.
  • Design/Technology: The Design/Tech Concentration emphasizes training for scenic, lighting, and costume designers, as well as those seeking careers as stage managers, technical directors, and other technical professions. Students who have interest and ability in any of the theatre design fields are encouraged to specialize in their field of interest, but also to experience and learn about the other fields with which their work must coordinate. So, for example, lighting designers study scenic design and costume design, so they may understand the crucial interactions of color, texture, and movement.
  • General Theatre: The General Theatre Concentration offers students with a wide range of interests an opportunity to explore theatre in all its many forms and aspects. Our General Theatre majors tend to be students who want to explore and understand theatre but do not intend to specialize as performers, designers, or technicians. Many of our General Theatre majors go on to be teachers, scholars, and writers for stage and screen.
