Giving you the opportunity to travel and enter the world of language and teaching, this degree is for the inquisitive and ambitious.

We have a strong-track record of teaching languages and this programme will provide you with Japanese language skills enriched with an understanding of Japanese culture. You will be prepared for teaching English in a multilingual world - all underpinned by the fascinating knowledge and practice of linguistics.

Teach English in Japan and around the world by studying Japanese, TESOL & Linguistics at York St John University. Whether you or a beginner or have prior knowledge of Japanese, we will find the right learning path to fit with your experience. You will be taught by our language experts in a communicative Japanese teaching style in your first year. Progressing through the programme you will study aspects of Japanese culture, communities and societies through the medium of Japanese. You can put your learning into practice with a year abroad in Japan, bringing your studies to life with through exciting real-world experience.

The TESOL side of the programme will give you a strong foundation in linguistics, how language is used and structured and an understanding of how to teach English to speakers of other languages. Alongside this, we have a range of fascinating linguistics modules such as World Englishes and Psycholinguistics which you can select to suit your individual interest. You will study the way speech is articulated, how language is structured and related to meaning and the way in which language choices can express identities and cultural values.

You will also get the opportunity to complete an internationally-recognised teaching qualification which is included in the programme’s tuition fees, subject to interview. The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) is awarded by Cambridge Assessment English, part of the University of Cambridge. This four-week intensive course is delivered on our campus at York St John University, so you can graduate with both a BA Honours Degree and a teaching qualification allowing you to work globally.
