Do you want to make a difference in the lives of children, young people and families?
If you want a career supporting children, young people and families, there is a good chance you will find yourself working with a range of people with differing educational and social needs. By choosing this strand of the Children, Young People & Families course you will gain specialist expertise which will make you stand out to employers.
Students study the same crucial, hard-hitting issues related to children, young people and families as those on the single honours programme but with
one module each semester dedicated to the study of Special Educational Needs and Inclusion (SENI). We approach a wide range of challenges and barriers, which can affect children and young people through various disciplines and ideological approaches. You will consider these issues both on an individual level and within wider social, political and cultural contexts.
In your specialist modules you will engage in debates about the meaning of SENI, the implications it may raise in your own future professional practice and the impact labelling someone as SEN can have on their life. You will consider how categorisation and stereotyping can lead to marginalisation, assess the media’s response to disability and evaluate the various interventions and therapies that are available to SENI practitioners. We’ll encourage you to recognise and reflect on your own preconceptions about disability, difference and SEN.
We want to share our values of equality, inclusion and social justice with you as you learn so that you leave us as a broad-minded, forward-thinking practitioner ready to go into a rewarding and vitally important career that makes a real difference in the lives of children and young people. Graduates leave us ready to take on the ever-changing worlds of education, health and welfare.
