In an international foundation year students will study courses related to their intended field of study alongside English to develop and enhance their skills as a student. Advancement into their intended program depends upon successful completion of the pathway program.

This International Foundation Year provides the subject knowledge, language proficiency and study skills students need to progress to degree study at the Durham University, Durham City campus in a range of subjects related to the humanities, law or social sciences.

After completing this pathway, students will transfer to the BA Theology and Religion program. At the Department of Theology and Religion, students are taught how to use the tools of philosophy, social science, history, literature and language to understand human beliefs and worldviews, past and present. This is done both from within, seeking to test our own beliefs for clarity and coherence, and from without, as critical observers. The department has a historic strength in the study of Christian thought, history, practice, and texts, while offering strong provision in other areas such as politics, ethics, non-Christian faith traditions, humanism and atheism (which are also belief systems).
