Description

Develop as an artist and an art specialist in the contemporary classroom. The combined degrees take five years to complete and you graduate with two degrees. Your BA - Art covers the subject you want to teach, while at the heart of the Education degree (BEd) are three professional semesters, which provide practical experience through supervised placements in schools.

Bachelor of Arts – Art

Build your program around your diverse interests across art, humanities, sciences and social sciences. Your program allows you to focus your attention on studio art and art history/museum studies courses as you come to understand and appreciate art from around the world and immerse yourself in the study and the conversations about culture and creativity. Compliment your studies with courses outside your area of focus to achieve the goals you have set out for your future endeavours.

You have the flexibility to explore a range of emerging and traditional art studio areas: drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, performance art, photography, printmaking, media and electronic art. You will learn a full range of technical and theoretical approaches to artmaking, put at the forefront of this diverse and exiting field of study.

As a senior student, you have 24/7 access to your own studio and the support from a studio professor of your choice, who will work one-on-one with you to develop your own artistic direction. In addition to having your own studio space, you will develop the critical abilities to evaluate artists and develop your artist style and direction through discussion and open dialogue on contemporary art with practicing arts on and off campus. Choose from courses that reflect today’s art word combined with art history to balance your art practice with academic studies

You have full access to co-operative education, international exchanges, independent and applied studies as well as volunteer opportunities. uLethbridge is the only university in Alberta to offer co-operative education to all majors in the university, at both the undergrad and grad level.

Bachelor of Education - Art Education

The 5-year combined degrees program allows you to graduate with two degrees. Studio courses introduce diverse materials and technical skills, while the focus of the Education degree is on three professional semesters, which provide practical experience through supervised placements in schools.

Studio courses introduce diverse materials and technical skills, and prepare you to move within a range of studio areas including drawing, digital fabrication, electronic art, installation and performance art, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, video and media art.

As a senior student, you have unlimited access to your own studio and support from a studio professor of your choice. Art History and Museum Studies courses help develop critical thinking and writing skills, preparing you for professional practice as an artist and educator.

As a student teacher, you have 27 weeks of practical classroom experience in a broad range of schools from rural to urban and elementary to secondary with a focus in your teachable area. As part of a graduating class of superior educators, the University of Lethbridge’s Faculty of Education teacher preparation is nationally recognized for its excellence.
