Description

The TWU Department of Geography and Environment delivers broad-based education that develops skilled leaders in the interdisciplinary fields of geography and environmental science.

From day one, Geography and Environment students are engaged in coursework that is rooted in geography, biology, chemistry, and the social sciences. All coursework is delivered from a Christian perspective, and informed by biblical teaching that positions humans as trusted stewards of the environment.

There are many political, social, ethical and philosophical issues affecting the environment and students are encouraged to look across the disciplines. Led by passionate scholars, students are exposed to rigorous classroom studies, extensive fieldwork, and a wide horizon of opportunities both on and off campus. Students also have the option of four emphases to pursue so they can tailor their degree towards their interests and strengths.

Uniquely, Trinity Western University is situated within a complex biogeographic region including marine, freshwater and montane habitats that are all easily accessible and provide exceptional research opportunities for students. The TWU Crow's Nest Ecological Research Area, for example, is a 72.7-acre property on Salt Spring Island. In addition to its breathtaking views, this property holds much ecological significance as it is home to some of the few remaining Garry oak (Quercus garryana) meadows in British Columbia. There are more plant species in this ecosystem than any other terrestrial location in coastal BC, and it is our responsibility to manage this property in such a way as to keep it ecologically healthy for future generations to enjoy. Our on-campus Ecosystem Study Area and nearby Blaauw Eco Forest also provide excellent opportunities for hands-on study.
