Description

The Therapeutic Recreation diploma program will prepare students to work with a variety of clients in many different health-care settings. Students will explore the impact of recreation and leisure on individual wellness and how to enhance the quality of life for clients through leisure activities. Students will gain knowledge and skills in program planning, client assessment, implementing individual and group activities, and working with a variety of different client populations. Students will explore the concepts, theory and practical experiences related to leadership and critical thinking.

Currently the Therapeutic Recreation diploma is recognized as meeting the requirements for entry to practice for professional membership status with the Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA).

Effective April 1, 2021, ATRA will require new applicants for professional membership to have a degree in therapeutic recreation or recreation/leisure studies.

For direct admission, applicant must be from an English speaking country or meet either of the following English test scores:

  • Min TOEFL iBT: 84 (Min Reading: 21.0, Min Writing: 21.0, Min Listening: 21.0, Min Speaking: 21.0)
  • Min IELTS overall: 6.5 (Min Reading: 6.0, Min Writing: 6.0, Min Listening: 6.0, Min Speaking: 6.0)
  • Min Duolingo English Test Score: 115

For conditional admission, you are required to provide English proficiency scores:

  • Min IELTS overall: 4
