Description

The Associate in Arts in English for Transfer (AA-T in English) is designed to provide a clear pathway to a CSU institution for students who plan to transfer and complete a CSU major or baccalaureate degree in English. California Community College students who are awarded an Associate in Arts in English for Transfer (AA-T in English) are guaranteed admission with junior standing somewhere in the CSU system and given priority admission consideration to their local CSU institution or to a program that is deemed similar to their community college major.
The Associate in Arts in English for Transfer (AA-T in English) provides students with a strong foundation in critical reading, writing, and thinking as well as literary analysis and research methods. Students majoring in English enroll in survey courses, which expose them to a range of types and styles of literature, courses in ethnic literatures, and courses in special topics such as film and creative writing. Upon completion of the the Associate in Arts in English for Transfer (AA-T in English), students will possess the knowledge and skills required for upper-division coursework in English. In addition, students will have gained preparation for careers in fields such as law, government, business, entertainment, advertising, public relations, writing, editing, and education.
Program Learning Outcomes

  • Students will write focused organized, well-developed essays that support clear thesis statements and demonstrate competence in Standard English grammar and usage.
  • Students will demonstrate critical thinking skills by analyzing and evaluating academic essays and literature.
  • Students will formulate and clearly communicate their positions on diverse issues.
  • Students will write a research paper that demonstrates the effective evaluation, integration, and documentation of sources.

Exams

English Proficiency Requirements:

For direct admission, applicant must be from an English speaking country or meet either of the following English test scores:

  • Min TOEFL iBT: 61
  • Min IELTS overall: 6 (Min Reading: 5.5, Min Writing: 6.0)

For conditional admission, instead of submitting language proficiency test scores, applicant may complete English courses prior to the academic program. The length of the English course is determined based on the applicant's level of English proficiency.
