Description

The Specialist in Education degree (Ed.S.) with a major in Psychology and Counseling offers a planned program of studies designed to lead to state licensure in counseling, school psychology, and psychology.

Three tracks are available: School Psychology, Clinical and Mental Health Counseling, and a Flexible OptionInformation about requirements for licensure can be obtained from the Arkansas Board of Examiners in Counseling, the Arkansas Department of Education, and the Arkansas Psychology Board and from the Program Coordinators in the Department of Psychology and Counseling. The design of each candidate's program is based on that student's previous academic preparation, professional experiences, and career aspirations.

The Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program is a CACREP accredited 60-hour program of study. This program prepares students for careers as professional counselors who meet the highest standards for delivering counseling services in a wide variety of community and agency settings. Clinical Mental health counselors work with individuals, families, and groups to address and treat mental, developmental, and emotional disorders and to promote optimum mental health. The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is CACREP accredited.

Students who complete the program are eligible to take the National Counselor Examination (NCE) offered by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) in order to qualify for both National Certified Counselor (NCC) and Arkansas Licensed Associate Counselor (LAC) status. An important aspect of the department's mission is to aid students and graduates become certified and/or licensed as professional counselors. The faculty believes that it is also its mission to instill a strong sense of professional identity, appreciation for their rich knowledge base and develop expertise in the skills of counseling.
